MBC History
The Evolution of Media Innovation Through the Decades
Radio Age
Founded in 1961, MBC began radio broadcasting as HLKV and established a nationwide network connecting six major Korean cities by 1965.
B/W TV Age
MBC launched TV Channel 11 in 1969, started Music FM Radio in 1971, and acquired Kyunghyang Shinmun in 1974.
Color TV Agee
MBC introduced color broadcasting (1981), relocated to Yeouido (1986), launched FM Radio (1987), and televised the Seoul Olympics (1988), while becoming a public corporation with the Foundation for Broadcast Culture as its main shareholder.
Multimedia Ages
Responding to the multichannel trend, MBC established subsidiaries including MBC Production, Mediatech, Arts Center, Academy, and Adcom from 1991 to 1993.
Digital Age
MBC pioneered digital broadcasting with cable (2001), satellite and DMB services (2005), built the Dream Center (2007), relocated to Sangam (2014), and became the world's first terrestrial UHD broadcaster (2017).
